The man who started it all — one lorry, one road, one principle.

In 1955, a young Joseph Thomas Anderson climbed into the cab of his first lorry and set about building something. Not an empire, not a brand - just an honest business doing honest work, in the county he called home.
Joseph - known to family and customers alike simply as Joe - had grown up with a deep practical instinct. He understood machinery, understood hard work, and above all understood people. It was that combination that made him not just a capable driver, but a trusted businessman at a time when a handshake still meant something.
Starting from Gateforth in the heart of North Yorkshire, he served the farms, factories, and construction sites of the region with the kind of quiet reliability that built reputations long before anyone had thought about marketing. Word got around. The fleet grew. The name Anderson became synonymous with getting the job done.
"He wasn't chasing the biggest contract or the flashiest truck. He was chasing the next satisfied customer - and there were a lot of them."
Over the decades that followed, Joseph passed his values down through the family as naturally as he passed the keys. The lorries got bigger. The cranes came. The capabilities expanded. But the foundation - care, reliability, and honest dealing - never changed.
Joseph passed away, but in the truest sense he never left. His name is above the door, his photograph is on the wall, and his approach to this business still shapes every decision made by the family that carries it forward today. JT Anderson Transport is what it is because of who he was.
A family business, built generation by generation.
Joseph Thomas Anderson starts the business from Gateforth, North Yorkshire, with a single vehicle and a straightforward proposition - reliable, professional haulage for the local region.
Demand from construction and agricultural customers across Yorkshire drives fleet expansion. Anderson becomes a trusted name across the county.
The business invests in lorry loader equipment, opening up new sectors - construction, plant hire, and heavy industry. The Anderson name extends into specialist lifting work.
The second generation begins working in the business, learning from Joseph directly. The transition of skills, values, and knowledge from founder to family is gradual and deliberate.
The business is formally incorporated as JT Anderson Transport Ltd, formalising the foundation Joseph built and setting the company up for continued growth.
Joseph's grandchildren join the business, bringing fresh energy while maintaining the core principles. The fleet is modernised with larger crane capacity, extending from 27tm up to 66tm.
Three generations on, JT Anderson Transport remains what Joseph built - a family business, operating from Gateforth, doing things properly. The cranes are bigger, the vehicles are newer, but the spirit is exactly the same.
Not just a business - a set of principles that still shape how we work every day.
If you said you'd be there, you'd be there. No excuses. Joe ran his business on the quiet confidence that comes from never letting anyone down.
The business was built for the family and around the family. That meant treating customers and employees as people, not transactions.
Joe understood machinery from the ground up. The attention to detail he brought to operating it - safely, skillfully, proudly - still defines how we work.
He never forgot where he came from. Gateforth. North Yorkshire. Home. The business has always been part of this community, and always will be.
